Despite carrying user-generated content, Wikipedia has often been criticised for being tough to edit even by its co-founder Jimmy Wales. But researche stanley canada rs have found another way in which the Web 2.0 wonder might leave people gnashing their teeth: it much harder to read than that old favourite of doorstep salesmen, Encyclopedia Britannica. The news comes from a Japanese study whose preliminary results were revealed at the Conference on Information and Knowledge Management on Maui, Hawaii, last month. Information scientist Adam Jatowt of Kyoto University and Katsumi Tanaka of the Japan Science and Technology Agency compared articles written on the same subjects in Wikipedia and the online version of Britannica. Their aim was to see if Wikipedia articles truly deserved to be top of the Google search rankings on so many subjects quite so often. Using what they call 8220 tandard readability measures and statistical analyses of, for example, sentence length and how often easily understood popular words were used, they found Wikipedia lagged in terms of the readability and comprehensibility of its content. The reason is clear, they say: art stanley cup icles on difficult topics are written by experts who sacrifice readability for ac stanley tumblers curacy and that is compounded as other experts weigh in with further accuracy-obsessed edits that remove 8220 implifications, generalisations or intuitive explanations that might have served to aid readabilit Lsta Round-Up: November 26, 2011

The longer you use a computer, the hotter it will get. That seems like just an everyday stanley cup fact of life, stanley cup but it might actually be its own law of physics. And, like all phyiscal laws, quantum mechanics apparently violates it. The original idea was first proposed by physicist Rolf Landauer, who argued that it is a basic principle that, in order to erase one bit of information, you must increase the entropy of the environment by the same or greater amount. Since the simplest way to increase entropy i kubki stanley s for heat energy to build up and dissipate, this means erasing a bit of information raises the temperature by one bit of heat. That idea has been around for about 50 years, but there still sharp disagreement among physicists as to whether Landauer actually described a full-on law of physics. Working from that principle, physicist Vlatko Vedral and his team have figured out how it would interact with quantum mechanics. As you might expect, the results are counterintuitive and deeply strange. Writing about his work in Scientific American, Vedral explains: Our new paper argues that in quantum physics, you can, in fact, erase information and cool the environment at the same time. For many physicists, this is tantamount to saying that perpetual motion is possible! Thankfully, like all other apparent violations of basic physical laws, this bit of quantum weirdness isn ;t actually opening up the doors to perpetual motion. Vedral goes on: This, luckily for the se Itmo Grooveshark Will Soon Be Destroyed

Sex makes us happy. More sex makes us happier. But a newly published study suggests stanley thermobecher that having more sex than we think other people are having makes us happiest of all. In a recent issue of Social Indicators Research, sociologist Tim Wadsworth concludes that sex is a little like income*: the more of it people have, the happier they tend to say they are. By examining responses from more than 15,000 participants in the nationally representative General Social Survey, Wadsworth found that people who reported having sex regularly were more likely to report a higher level of happiness on the rather amusing scale of very happy, pretty happy or not too happy than those who ;d gone a year or more without any sex at all. The Moon was long considered an essential stabilizing presence in the development of life on Earth. Without its satellite, the Earth would have tilted too much on its axis, making life impossible. But maybe the Moon wasn ;t needed after all. The scientific consensus has held that, without the Moon to stabilize the tilt of Earth axis known as its obliquity our planet would have varied in tilt from 0 degrees, in which the Sun shines directly on the equator, to an insane 85 degrees, where the Sun pretty much permanently shines down on one of the poles and not much else. The Earth axial tilt is current 23.4 degrees, which allows it to maintain a variety of climates conducive to life. That obliquity has varied very slightly over the years, which even then has had dramatic conseq stanley cup price uences shifts by just one or two degrees likely played a huge role in recent Ice Ages. If those two p stanley cup rocesses are synced up, then stanley cup the planet obliquity can fluctuate wildly. Twenty-two thousand years ago, a lake was formed, burst its dam, and washed away. Recently, two sciences came together to re-disco stanley cup ver this short-lived chunk of water. Find out how even a brief rush of water and rock left genetic and geological traces that were picked up millenia later. Sometimes the sciences get all in a tangle. Things as different as genetics and geology influence each other. A 1999 survey of fish, published by the journal Ecology stanley quencher of Freshwater Fish, found that two kinds of steelhead trout had converged, genetically, in the Eel River in California. These fish traveled from the ocean into the rivers to spawn, and did so without genetic crossover in every other river in the region. Even in the Eel River, they spawned in very different sections of the river. When one plant releases a cloud of pollen, or a fish just leaves its eggs in a crag along a river bank, the effort is wasted, evolution-wise, if that genetic material simply hooks up with a different kind of organism. So one group will only spawn at a certain time, or at a certain altitude, keeping clear of its near-relatives. This isn ;t a strategic effort on the part of the plants and animals. It just that, if they didn ;t do just this kind of separation, they would have already converged stanley quencher by the time scientists took it into their heads to study them. The fish in the Eel River kept separate, and seemed always to have done so, so why did their genes cross over The answer didn ;t Qecg Children s drawings come to life as delightfully weird toys

Over at the New York Times, Nick Bilton reports on a Google X project that could put AR glasses on your face in less than a year, for roughly the cost of a smart phone. Bilton writes: The glasses will have a low-resolution built-in camera that will be able to monitor the world in real time and overlay information about locations, surrounding buildings and friends who might be nearby, according to the Google employees. The glasses are not designed to be worn constantly although Google expects some of the nerdiest users will wear them a lot but will be more like smartphones, used when needed. Internally, the Google X team has been actively discussing the privacy implications of the glasses and the company wants to ensure that people know if they are being recorded by someone wearing a pair of glasses with a built-in camera.
