The youth in Hiawatha First Nation helped play their part in the communitys construction of a new youth centre by contributing its name, Oshkii-ayaaa.The name, which means young spirit, was announced at the grand opening ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 14, where the community gathered stanley thermoskannen to celebrate the new facility.Chief Laurie Carr briefly introduced the youth centre, but allowed the communitys children and teens to make the announcement themselves since it was their accomplishment. August 31, 2021 鈥?The Kentucky Department of Education has awardedMetcalfe County Schools a $665,726 Kentucky Comprehensive Literacy KyCL grant.KyCL is a federally funded program that focuses on strengthening teacher practice in readingand writing. It also provides family training and funding for literacy assessments andinterventions.Metcalfe County is one of 19 districts awarded the grant, which will begin implementation onOctober 1. We are beyond pleased to receive additional funding to help us in our pursuit to bolster literacyin Metcalfe County Schools, Superintendent Josh Hurt said. We understand how importantreading is to every child and hope to put this award to good use in the future.
